Monte Palace Tropical Garden

There is a popular saying in Madeira that says spring came to spend the winter here … I would say that it came and never go away. Madeira is flowered all year round, and its colors are beautiful.

It´s not surprising that there are more than 20 Gardens and Parks on Madeira Island.

The Monte Palace Tropical Garden is one of my favorites. It is located on top of a beautiful hill with breathtaking views of the Bay of Funchal. In 18th Century it was a luxurious hotel that hosted many important people. Today, this beautiful property has become a Museum and Garden.

In an area of 70,000 m2, Monte Palace Tropical Garden has an abundant collection of exotic plants from all over the world. There are “Cicas” and “Proteas” from South Africa, “Azaleas” from Belgium, “Urzes” from Scotland, as well as endemic plants from our Laurissilva Forest.

The gardens are even more enriched with ostentatious adornments such as lanterns and sculptures from different parts of the world, cultures and eras. In addition to the beautiful and famous tile collection from the XV-XX centuries, a panel with 166 tiles, entitled “The Adventure of the Portuguese in Japan”, forming a group of 40 panels depicting the History of Portugal.

The Monte Palace Tropical Garden has a space with three galleries, two of sculptures and one that exposes a collection of minerals.
