Rabaçal, 25 Fontes and Risco Waterfall (PR6): The Classic Double Levada Walk

The Vereda do Urzal is a demanding one-way mountain hike from Curral das Freiras to Boaventura, not an Encumeada trail and not PR6.2. Officially numbered PR2, it crosses the central mountains on an old north–south route, climbing towards Boca das Torrinhas before descending into the remote Urzal area above Boaventura. In this updated guide: the correct route details, the elevation profile, how to arrange transport, weather and safety risks, and whether this is realistic without a car.

What Vereda do Urzal really is — and why the route is often confused

The Vereda do Urzal PR2 hike Madeira is a linear classified walking route linking Curral das Freiras with Boaventura on the north coast. The current IFCN register lists it as 10.3 km, managed by the regional forest and nature authority, with the official passing places given as Curral das Freiras and Boaventura. At the time of checking in November 2026, the route was marked open, but this can change quickly after heavy rain, wind, landslides or maintenance work.

It is sometimes mistakenly described as “PR6.2” or as a hike from Encumeada. PR6.2 is actually the Levada do Alecrim in Rabaçal. Encumeada is associated with PR1.3, while PR2 meets the high-mountain network near Boca das Torrinhas. Do not assume that a connection shown on an older map is suitable or open for a longer mountain crossing: check each individual trail’s official status on the morning of your hike.

The reward is a far wilder experience than Madeira’s famous levada walks. You begin among the dramatic enclosed slopes of Curral das Freiras, climb steadily into heath and high-altitude mountain terrain, then descend through increasingly lush vegetation towards Boaventura. This is not the Ribeira da Janela valley route; it finishes in the Urzal area above Boaventura, on Madeira’s north side.

Route profile: a long climb followed by a serious descent

The standard direction is Curral das Freiras to Lombo do Urzal, Boaventura. Older official visitor material gives an estimated walking time of 4 hours 30 minutes, a maximum altitude of 1,450 metres and a minimum of 519 metres. The current IFCN register uses a 10.3 km distance, while older material records 10.6 km; the practical difference is negligible, but the official live register should take priority for route status.

From Fajã dos Cardos above Curral das Freiras, the route works uphill for a long time rather than easing you into the day. The climb to Boca das Torrinhas is sustained and can feel much harder in humid cloud, heat or strong wind. From the high point, the route turns into a lengthy descent towards the north coast. That downhill section is beautiful but demanding on knees, ankles and concentration, especially when wet.

For that reason, treat PR2 as a strenuous full-day commitment even if the published walking time looks modest. Allow extra time for transport, photo stops, muddy ground, navigation at junctions and slower progress in mist. It suits hikers with mountain fitness, reliable footwear and experience of uneven, steep paths; it is not a casual substitute for a short levada walk.

How to get there and organise the return transfer

Transport is the main challenge of the Vereda do Urzal. The hike starts in the Curral das Freiras area and ends at Lombo do Urzal above Boaventura, so a normal rental-car plan leaves one vehicle at the wrong end. The simplest arrangement is a pre-booked private transfer: ask to be dropped near the PR2 start at Fajã dos Cardos and collected at the Boaventura end at a clearly agreed time and location.

It can be done without a car, but only with careful planning. Public transport serves Curral das Freiras from Funchal, yet the finish is remote and bus frequencies on the north side are not designed around hikers finishing late from the mountains. Do not begin assuming you can simply find a bus or taxi after the descent. Arrange a collection in advance, carry your driver’s contact details and leave a generous time buffer.

For visitors relying on buses and transfers, our guide to the best Madeira hikes without a car explains the practical approach: select one-way walks only when both trailheads and the return journey are genuinely covered. PR2 is feasible without driving, but it is not one of the island’s easiest independent public-transport hikes.

Weather, trail status and mountain safety

PR2 crosses a high, changeable part of Madeira. Curral das Freiras may be warm and clear while Boca das Torrinhas is cold, windy or inside cloud. Rain makes stone, roots and earth slick; low cloud removes visibility; and recent storms can lead to closures or restrictions. Take a waterproof outer layer, warm insulating layer, charged phone, offline mapping, head torch, sufficient water and food, even if the forecast looks settled.

Before leaving, consult the official IFCN classified-route status page and make the required reservation through the official system. In 2026, individual non-PR1 routes cost €4.50 for non-resident visitors; every intended route still requires an advance reservation, even where a multi-route pass applies. Residents of Madeira and children aged 12 or under are among the exempt groups.

Do not continue beyond a closure sign, use an unofficial shortcut, or improvise an extension towards Pico Ruivo or Encumeada. Conditions and access rules can differ between adjoining paths. For broader seasonal planning, read Madeira weather by month before choosing your hiking day.

What makes this hike worth the effort

Vereda do Urzal feels like a journey through several Madeiras in one day. The first part looks into the dramatic natural amphitheatre of Curral das Freiras, where jagged central peaks rise tightly around the valley. Higher up, the landscape becomes more open, raw and weather-beaten. On the northward descent, moisture-loving vegetation and Laurissilva influence return, bringing a greener and quieter finish.

It is particularly rewarding for walkers who prefer old mountain connections to busy waterfall paths. You will not find visitor facilities along the trail, nor should you expect the constant foot traffic of Rabaçal or Pico do Areeiro. The isolation is a major part of its appeal, but also the reason to plan conservatively.

  • Start early: Build in time for the climb, cloud delays and a pre-arranged collection at the Boaventura end.
  • Walk south to north: Curral das Freiras to Boaventura follows the recognised route direction and keeps the long descent for the second half.
  • Book your pickup before setting off: Mobile signal can be unreliable in mountain folds and forested sections.
  • Carry more water than you expect to need: There are no dependable refreshment stops once you have begun the route.
  • Use proper hiking boots or trail shoes: Grip matters on damp stone, loose ground and the prolonged descent.
  • Check status, not just weather: A dry forecast does not guarantee that a route is open after recent damage or maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

Is Vereda do Urzal PR6.2?
No. Vereda do Urzal is PR2. PR6.2 is Levada do Alecrim in the Rabaçal area.

How difficult is the Vereda do Urzal hike?
It is demanding for most visitors because of the sustained ascent from Curral das Freiras, high-mountain exposure and the long descent to Boaventura. It is best for fit, experienced hikers rather than beginners.

Can I hike Vereda do Urzal without a car?
Yes, but a pre-arranged transfer is strongly recommended. Public transport can get you towards Curral das Freiras, but the remote Boaventura finish makes an unplanned return difficult.

Do I need to pay and reserve PR2?
Yes. PR2 is an IFCN classified route subject to advance booking. In 2026, the individual visitor fee for non-PR1 routes is €4.50 for non-residents, subject to the official exemptions and current booking rules.
