Rabaçal, 25 Fontes e Cascata do Risco (PR6): O clássico percurso pelas duas levadas

The Levada do Norte walk is one of Madeira’s best choices for an easy-going, sun-facing levada walk when the high mountains are hidden by cloud. Running across the cultivated south-western slopes above Câmara de Lobos, Quinta Grande and Campanário, it combines vineyard terraces, sea-facing views, village life and the steady sound of irrigation water. In this updated guide: choose the best section for your time, organise a one-way walk, prepare for tunnels and exposed stretches, and know what to expect along the route.

What makes the Levada do Norte special

Levada do Norte is a major irrigation channel built to bring water from Madeira’s wetter north towards farmland on the south coast. The section around Câmara de Lobos is not a remote mountain expedition: it is a working landscape of vines, small holdings, houses and steep cultivated slopes, with wide views opening towards the coast and Funchal.

The levada was inaugurated on 1 June 1952 and became an important local connection through the higher parts of Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, Câmara de Lobos and Quinta Grande. That lived-in character is exactly its appeal. Rather than walking through deep forest for hours, you pass grapes, banana plants, garden plots and everyday rural Madeira. Estreito is particularly associated with vineyards and Madeira wine production, so the route is especially attractive in late summer and early autumn, when harvesting activity may be visible around the village.

It is also a sensible weather alternative. These south-facing slopes are generally lower and drier than the central mountains, so they can be brighter when Pico do Areeiro, Rabaçal or the north coast are under cloud. That is not a guarantee of sunshine, however: check the forecast locally and do not assume a clear morning in Funchal means dry conditions everywhere.

Choose the right Levada do Norte section

The Levada do Norte is long, with several access points, so it is better treated as a collection of walks than one fixed tourist trail. For most independent visitors, the most rewarding accessible stretches are around Estreito de Câmara de Lobos and Quinta Grande.

Estreito de Câmara de Lobos out-and-back: Start near Estreitinho or another mapped access point above Estreito, then follow the levada west for as long as suits you before returning the same way. This is the least complicated option, avoids transport pressure and gives a good introduction to the vineyard scenery. It works well as a short walk of around two to three hours including stops.

Estreito to Quinta Grande one-way: This is the better choice for walkers who want variety without committing to the whole route. You move through agricultural terraces and scattered homes, with broader views as you approach the Quinta Grande area. Arrange your collection point before you set off; do not rely on finding a taxi directly beside the levada.

Quinta Grande towards Campanário: This is a quieter, more rural continuation for confident walkers with a pre-arranged lift. It can include narrower, more enclosed passages and leads towards the western side of the system. It is a good longer half-day proposition, but navigation matters more here than on the village-adjacent sections.

Getting there and solving the one-way logistics

A hire car or taxi makes this walk much easier than public transport. The levada crosses roads and passes close to villages, but its access points are not always obvious from the main road. Save your exact start and finish pins offline before leaving Funchal, and tell a taxi driver the nearest road or locality rather than simply saying “Levada do Norte”.

If you have two cars, leave one at the finish and drive the other to the start. This is the simplest method for a one-way day. With one car, walk out and back, or pre-book a taxi for a specific village road at the far end. Local buses serve the wider Câmara de Lobos and Estreito area, but timetables and stops do not make a dependable solution for every levada entrance; use the official SIGA journey planner for the day of travel.

There are cafés, bakeries and small bars in Estreito and Quinta Grande, but not reliably on the levada itself. Buy water and snacks before starting, especially if you are continuing beyond Quinta Grande. If you finish near Cabo Girão, allow time for the nearby Cabo Girão Skywalk, rather than trying to fit it in before the walk.

Tunnels, exposure and what the path is really like

Do not mistake “easy levada” for completely risk-free. The walking is mostly gentle because the channel follows a contour, but surfaces vary between concrete, stone, earth and damp sections under vegetation. After rain, moss and mud can make the path slippery.

Several parts feel open rather than exposed, with a hillside dropping away beside the path and no continuous handrail. People comfortable with normal levada walking will usually be fine, but this is not the best choice for anyone with a strong fear of heights. Keep children close and never balance on the channel edge: the levada remains a working watercourse.

Anúncio

Some itineraries use tunnels, including a roughly 300-metre tunnel on western sections of the Levada do Norte. A phone torch is a poor substitute for a head torch: use a hands-free light, watch your footing and be prepared for wet walls, uneven ground and low overhead rock. If a tunnel entrance looks blocked, flooded or unsafe, turn back. Before travelling, check the official IFCN walking-route information and follow any local closures or fire restrictions.

Why this is a strong walk for a cloudy mountain day

Madeira’s weather changes sharply with altitude. The classic high routes can be spectacular, but cloud, wind and low visibility can quickly reduce the experience. Levada do Norte stays on the populated southern slopes, where the air is often warmer and the views are directed towards the coast rather than into the cloud-prone interior.

Choose it for an unhurried day: start in Estreito, have coffee before setting off, walk at a steady pace through the vineyards, then finish with lunch in Câmara de Lobos or Quinta Grande. For a very different highland levada experience on a clearer day, compare it with the Levada do Pináculo e Folhadal above Ribeira Brava.

  • Comece cedo: The route is sunnier than many levadas, so late morning and afternoon heat can feel surprisingly strong.
  • Walk out and back if unsure: It is the safest option when you do not have confirmed transport at the far end.
  • Carry a head torch: Bring one whenever your map includes a tunnel, even if you expect to walk in daylight.
  • Wear shoes with grip: The gradient is modest, but damp levada edges and muddy sections can be slippery.
  • Keep clear of the water channel: This is active irrigation infrastructure, not a place to sit, step across carelessly or let children play.
  • Download maps offline: Road crossings and alternative paths can be confusing, particularly around Quinta Grande.

Perguntas frequentes

Is the Levada do Norte walk suitable for beginners?
Yes, the main walking is relatively level and the Estreito out-and-back section is suitable for reasonably fit beginners. Choose a short stretch first, wear grippy footwear and avoid tunnel or exposed sections if they make you uncomfortable.

How long is the Levada do Norte walk in Madeira?
The route has many possible combinations. A published local itinerary from Estreitinho is 16.75 km and takes about 5 hours 46 minutes, but most visitors walk a shorter return section or arrange a one-way route.

Do I need a torch for Levada do Norte?
Carry a head torch if your planned route includes a tunnel. Longer western sections can include a tunnel of around 300 metres, where daylight is not enough for safe footing.

Can I walk Levada do Norte when Madeira’s mountains are cloudy?
Often, yes. Its south-coast position and lower elevation can make it a good alternative to high mountain walks, but rain, wind and local cloud are still possible. Check conditions on the morning of your walk.
