Machico: Madeira's first capital and its golden beach

Pico do Facho Viewpoint is one of the best easy panoramas in eastern Madeira, looking directly over Machico Bay, Madeira Airport’s runway and the long outline of Ponta de São Lourenço. High above Machico, it is a short but rewarding stop for drivers, photographers and anyone arriving early on the island. In this updated guide: what you can see from the viewpoint, how to drive or walk up, where parking is most difficult, when the light is best and how to fit Pico do Facho into an east-coast day.

Why Pico do Facho Viewpoint is worth the detour

El Pico do Facho viewpoint Madeira sits above the eastern side of Machico at roughly 280 metres above sea level. Its position makes the view unusually broad: below are the curved bay, the town’s sandy beach and the wide floor of the Machico valley; to one side is Madeira Airport and its spectacular runway over the sea; further east are Caniçal and the dry, sculpted peninsula of São Lourenço.

It is also a good place to understand Madeira’s dramatic geography. Machico’s valley opens comparatively gently towards the ocean, while the surrounding slopes rise sharply behind it. On a very clear day, look inland for the central mountain range and offshore towards the Desertas Islands; facing east, Porto Santo may appear as a pale strip on the horizon.

The name facho means beacon. In earlier times, fires were lit on this high point to warn local communities of approaching enemy ships. Today it is a relaxed public lookout rather than a formal historical monument, with a renovated viewing area, benches and a picnic and barbecue zone.

How to get to Pico do Facho by car

For most visitors, driving is the simplest option. From central Machico, follow the road towards Caniçal and the old tunnel area, then take the signed uphill road to Pico do Facho before the tunnel. The final approach is narrow, steep and winding, but it is paved and manageable in a standard hire car when driven patiently.

The important practical point is parking. The road reaches the viewpoint, but the space at the top is constrained and was not designed for large volumes of vehicles. Do not assume you will find a conventional car park or space to turn a large vehicle around easily. Use only available spaces that do not obstruct traffic, entrances or the turning area, and be prepared to leave promptly if the top is busy.

Early morning is usually the easiest time to park, particularly in summer and at weekends. The viewpoint is popular with residents as well as visitors, especially when families use the picnic facilities. It is best treated as a brief scenic stop rather than a place to leave a car for hours.

Walking up from Machico: steep but satisfying

Walking to Pico do Facho gives the viewpoint more of a sense of achievement. The ascent begins near the lower part of Machico and climbs through local streets, steps and hillside paths towards the summit. It is not a classic official PR walking route with the waymarking and infrastructure of Madeira’s better-known hikes, so download an offline map before leaving town and do not rely on a single sign.

The route is steep rather than technical. Wear trainers with grip or proper walking shoes, carry water and expect exposed stretches where the sun can feel strong. The return descent deserves care too: concrete steps and sloping lanes can be slippery after rain.

If you are already staying in Machico, the walk is an excellent alternative to driving. It turns a simple viewpoint visit into a half-day outing, with plenty of excuses to pause and watch the changing perspective over the bay. Visitors seeking a properly signed forest walk can instead consider the nearby Vereda das Funduras (PR5) from Portela.

Photography, aircraft views and wind conditions

Pico do Facho is especially good for wide landscape photographs because the airport runway, sea, town and mountains fit into one frame. A wide-angle lens works well for the full sweep of Machico Bay, while a short telephoto lens is useful for isolating aircraft, the runway structure or the ridges of São Lourenço.

For the clearest overall view, aim for early morning, when the air is often fresher and the rising sun begins to illuminate Machico below. Later in the day can bring warmer colour across the slopes, but cloud, sea haze and stronger contrast may make distant mountains less distinct. Sunset is still enjoyable, although the most photogenic conditions depend on the cloud layer rather than the clock.

This is an exposed ridge, and the wind can be noticeably stronger than it is down in Machico. Bring an extra layer even on a warm day, secure hats and camera straps, and keep children close to you near open edges. Strong gusts are also a reason to leave drones packed away: the viewpoint is close to Madeira Airport, where aviation restrictions and safety must always take priority.

How to build Pico do Facho into an east-coast itinerary

Pico do Facho works best as an early stop rather than the main event of the day. If you are arriving at the airport, it is a worthwhile first panorama after collecting your car; see our practical guide to arriving at Madeira Airport for first-day logistics. From the viewpoint, descend to Machico for coffee, a stroll along the promenade or time at the sandy beach.

Continue east to Caniçal for the harbour and Whale Museum, then drive to Ponta do Rosto or Baía d’Abra for the volcanic scenery at the start of Ponta de São Lourenço. This sequence gives you a useful contrast between the green Machico valley, the working coast of Caniçal and the much drier eastern peninsula. For a complete route with timings and extra stops, use our Madeira east coast day trip guide.

  • Go before breakfast if possible. You are more likely to find space on the narrow upper road and enjoy quieter photographs.
  • Check the cloud direction, not only the forecast icon. Low cloud can hide the central peaks while leaving Machico Bay completely clear.
  • Keep your visit flexible. This is a viewpoint, not a timed attraction; return later if haze or wind spoils the view.
  • Use the picnic area respectfully. It is a valued local leisure space, so take all rubbish away and leave barbecue areas clean.
  • Do not block the turning space. Larger vehicles need room at the end of the access road.
  • Look both ways. The famous Machico-and-airport view is only half the experience; turn east towards Caniçal and the distant islands.

Preguntas frecuentes

Is Pico do Facho Viewpoint free to visit?
Pico do Facho is an open public viewpoint and no admission ticket is required. The coin-operated binoculars are optional and accept €1 and €2 coins.

Can I see planes from Pico do Facho?
Yes. The viewpoint has a very clear elevated view towards Madeira Airport and its runway, making it one of the island’s best places to observe aircraft movements from a distance.

Is Pico do Facho suitable for people with limited mobility?
The viewpoint is reached by road and the main viewing area is close to the vehicle access, but the terrain is sloping and facilities may not suit every mobility need. Check conditions on arrival and avoid assuming that every part of the picnic and upper platform area is step-free.

How long should I allow for Pico do Facho?
Allow a short stop for the view and photographs, or longer if you are using the picnic area. If walking uphill from Machico, allow substantially more time for the steep ascent and return.
