From “furados” dug by hand to modern highways<\/h2>\n

The story of Madeira’s tunnels begins long before the motorway era. The first passages, called “furados”<\/strong>, foram escavados \u00e0 m\u00e3o na rocha vulc\u00e2nica \u2014 buracos estreitos e escuros que permitiam aos agricultores e pescadores deslocarem-se entre vales que, de outra forma, ficariam isolados uns dos outros.<\/p>\n

A transforma\u00e7\u00e3o ocorreu nas d\u00e9cadas de 1990 e 2000, quando os projetos rodovi\u00e1rios financiados pela UE substitu\u00edram as antigas e assustadoras estradas regionais pela rede moderna que hoje se percorre. A antiga estrada costeira ER101 entre S\u00e3o Vicente e Porto Moniz \u2014 uma faixa estreita escavada na face do penhasco, banhada por cascatas \u2014 foi substitu\u00edda pela via r\u00e1pida VE2 e pelos seus t\u00faneis na d\u00e9cada de 2000.<\/p>\n
