It is a protected landscape too: it is classified as a Partial Nature Reserve heritage site, home to rare plants and a diversified fauna, including one of the largest colonies of seagulls in the region, and protected seabirds such as shearwaters and Bulwer’s petrels. Independent hikers and guides generally report a slightly longer figure once you add the optional climb to the final viewpoint, putting the round trip closer to 7 km and the total time, including stops, at around 2.5 hours’ walking time, with modest altitude changes, making it accessible to most reasonably fit hikers.<\/p>\n

The terrain itself is easy underfoot for most of the route. As one recent hiker put it, the difficulty is easy to moderate depending on fitness level, but not technically challenging, with the trail including a gentle incline and only one final steep climb to the Miradouro do Ponta do Furado. This is the single most important practical warning for PR8. Multiple recent trail reports agree: there is zero shade on the trail, so don’t forget your sunblock, and hat and sunglasses are essential. The exposure works both ways \u2014 sun in summer, and unpredictable wind and rain at any time of year, since the trail is completely exposed and the weather can change quite a bit; wind and rain can literally come at any time, and if it’s not raining and windy, it’s likely hot with plenty of sunshine and no shade.<\/p>\n

Water is the other essential. While you can buy some at Cais do Sardinha, it’s quite far into the hike, so you’ll want to have some before then. Bring at least a litre per person, a light waterproof layer, and proper walking shoes \u2014 the path includes rocky, uneven sections. Getting there and parking at Ba\u00eda d’Abra<\/h2>\n

The trailhead sits at the very end of the ER109 road, past Cani\u00e7al, roughly 30-45 minutes’ drive from Funchal. Parking is currently free but limited: free parking is available near the start of the trail at Ba\u00eda d’Abra, although spaces can fill up quickly, so it’s best to come early in the day. Several recent visitors confirm the pattern \u2014 arrive by 8am and you’ll find a spot; arrive after 10am in high season and the lot, plus the roadside overflow, will likely be full.<\/p>\n

If you don’t want to drive, the SAM company’s bus 113 runs from Funchal all the way to the Ba\u00eda d’Abra stop right at the trailhead, though you can catch the 113 bus from Funchal bus station to Ba\u00eda d’Abra, which will drop you off right outside the PR8 trailhead, taking around 1 hour and 20 minutes and costing just under \u20ac3. Check the current SAM timetable before you go, as services are not frequent. Around two-thirds of the way along, you’ll reach Casa do Sardinha, a cluster of old farm buildings that now houses a small caf\u00e9. There’s a small caf\u00e9, Casa do Sardinha Sea Spot Caf\u00e9, in a gorgeous location near the end of the hike which is open from 10:00 to 18:00 \u2014 useful for a coffee, but expect prices to reflect the remote location. Just beyond it lies Cais do Sardinha, a sheltered rocky cove that’s the trail’s official reward: at the end of the walk, enjoy a well-deserved swim at Cais do Sardinha.<\/p>\n
