O que \u00e9 a Floresta do Fanal?<\/h2>\n

Fanal sits within the Laurissilva, the ancient laurel forest that once covered much of southern Europe and now survives almost intact only on Madeira and a few other Atlantic islands. The Laurissilva Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since December 1999, is one of Madeira’s most sacred and protected natural treasures, and Fanal is one of the places where this forest has the most vivid coverage. Situated between Ribeira da Janela and the Paul da Serra plateau, it is famous for its centenary laurel (Ocotea foetens) forest, where some specimens date back to before the discovery of the island.<\/p>\n

The star attraction is the collection of “Til” trees, whose trunks have been twisted and hollowed by centuries of wind and moisture into shapes that genuinely look otherworldly. Their true age is hard to pin down precisely, but naturalists commonly estimate that some trees are estimated to be over 500 years old, acting as living monuments to the planet’s prehistoric past.<\/p>\n

Warm, moist air pushed up from the Atlantic condenses as it rises over the plateau, wrapping the trees in a slow-moving mist that can appear and disappear within minutes.<\/p>\n

Don’t assume fog is guaranteed, though. More often than not it’s going to be quite foggy and moody up there, and even though it may be sunny 5 km from the trailhead, you might still see a huge cloud hovering over the Fanal area. If you’re based on the north coast, Porto Moniz is by far the most convenient launchpad for Fanal, cutting a journey that can take over an hour from Funchal down to a short countryside drive. Several local guides put the drive time at around just a 25-minute drive away and perfectly located for exploring Madeira’s wild northwest. The route climbs steadily inland from the coast, following signs toward Ribeira da Janela and the Paul da Serra plateau before reaching the forest.<\/p>\n

Caminhada f\u00e1cil versus o percurso completo da PR13, Vereda do Fanal<\/h2>\n

Most visitors never do a “hike” at Fanal at all, and that’s perfectly fine. From the main car park, you can park your car and walk a few hundred meters straight into the forest or to visit the nearby viewpoint, which is also just a few hundred meters away from the parking lot. That short loop among the gnarled Til trees is all most people need for the classic photographs, and it works for families and casual visitors alike.<\/p>\n

For a proper hiking day, the classified PR13 Vereda do Fanal is the star route of the area. According to the official trail data, Distance: 10.8 km, Difficulty: Moderate, Duration: 4 hours, Start\/End: E.R. 209 Assobiadores \/ E.R. 209 Fanal, Max. Altitude \/ Min. Altitude: 1420 m \/ 1130 m. The path is endemic of Madeira, a Unesco Natural World Heritage Site, in a perfect state of conservation and development, and this scenery of great natural exuberance accompanies and marks the whole experience of hiking along Vereda do Fanal. It finishes right at Fanal itself, where Vereda do Fanal ends at Fanal, where you will find a small volcanic crater classified as a Rest and Quiet Reserve by the Madeira Natural Park, the ideal place to relax and unwind while enjoying the views from the natural viewpoints and the unique surroundings of the centenary Til woods. If it’s been a rainy winter, that crater can even fill with water, mirroring the fog-draped trees on its surface.<\/p>\n

Reservas, taxas e as novas regras dos percursos para 2026<\/h2>\n

Since the start of 2026, hiking any classified PR trail on Madeira, including PR13, requires advance booking. Access to all classified walking trails (PR) in Madeira requires a prior time reservation through the SIMplifica digital platform before starting your hike, and booking is mandatory for individual visitors, groups, and participants within tourism companies. In 2026, the fee applicable to classified hiking trails (PR) is generally \u20ac4.50 per person. Residents of the Autonomous Region of Madeira are exempt from payment, though everyone, including children, still needs to register through the portal. Note that this fee and booking requirement applies to the official PR13 trail itself \u2014 simply parking and strolling into the forest near the Posto Florestal is not part of the classified route and doesn’t require a reservation.<\/p>\n
