Machico: Madeira's first capital and its golden beach

Pico da Urze is one of Madeira’s best quiet highland stops for wide views over the Rabaçal valley, misty moorland scenery and easy access to famous levada walks. Rather than a dramatic summit hike, it is a scenic roadside area on the edge of Paul da Serra where the open plateau suddenly gives way to deep, forested valleys. In this updated guide: where to find the viewpoint, how to drive there safely, what weather to expect, where to eat nearby and how to combine the stop with Rabaçal’s walking trails.

What is Pico da Urze and why is it worth visiting?

Pico da Urze is a highland area beside Paul da Serra, Madeira’s broad central-western plateau. Travellers usually come here for the Miradouro do Rabaçal, the viewpoint overlooking the remarkable green sweep of the Rabaçal valley. From this edge of the plateau, the landscape changes quickly: open grassland, low heath and wind-shaped vegetation give way to steep slopes covered by Laurissilva forest.

This is not the place to expect railings, souvenir stalls or a busy viewpoint complex. Its appeal is the sense of space. On a clear day, the view reaches across one of Madeira’s largest forested valleys; when cloud rolls in, the same scene becomes atmospheric and almost other-worldly. The Rabaçal area lies within protected natural landscapes, so it is also a good choice for travellers seeking a quieter contrast to Madeira’s better-known peak roads.

Anúncio

It makes an excellent short stop for drivers crossing Paul da Serra, but it is especially worthwhile before or after a walk in Rabaçal. For a broader introduction to the landscape around you, see our guide to Madeira’s largest forests.

Pico da Urze Madeira: how to visit by car

The practical way to visit Pico da Urze is by car. It sits on the high roads around Rabaçal and Paul da Serra, with the official PR 6 and PR 6.1 trail access points beginning from ER 105 in the Rabaçal area. If you are using sat-nav, search for “Miradouro do Rabaçal” or “Rabaçal, Calheta” rather than relying on “Pico da Urze” alone, as the name refers to a wider upland area.

The roads are surfaced but feel very different from Madeira’s expressways. Expect bends, changing visibility, wet sections and occasional livestock near the plateau. Drive slowly, keep well within your lane and do not stop on narrow bends simply to photograph the views. In cloud, use dipped headlights and allow more time than your map suggests.

Road conditions can change after heavy rain, strong wind or maintenance work. Before leaving the coast, check the official trail status if you plan to walk, and check local road notices if poor weather is forecast. Do not treat this high road as a scenic detour to attempt in dense fog, especially if you are not comfortable driving on Madeira’s mountain roads.

Weather at Pico da Urze: expect four seasons in one stop

Paul da Serra has an average altitude of around 1,500 metres, and Pico da Urze shares its exposed highland character. It can be distinctly colder, windier and wetter here than in Funchal, Calheta or Ponta do Sol. A bright coastal morning can turn into low cloud and drizzle by the time you reach the plateau.

For the best chance of clear valley views, visit early in the day and remain flexible. However, do not dismiss a cloudy forecast completely: passing mist is part of the experience and often creates the most memorable photographs. The important point is to dress for it. Bring a waterproof outer layer, warm mid-layer and sturdy shoes even if you only intend to make a brief stop.

Visibility is the deciding factor. If the valley is covered in cloud, have a coffee, wait a little and look again rather than immediately moving on. Conditions can improve quickly, although they can also worsen just as fast.

Combine Pico da Urze with Rabaçal walks

Pico da Urze is an ideal starting point for choosing a Rabaçal walk according to your energy and available time. The famous PR 6 Levada das 25 Fontes is a moderate route of 4.3 km each way, with an official estimate of three hours. It leads to the lagoon formed by the many springs flowing from Paul da Serra and passes through lush Laurissilva scenery.

If you want a shorter and easier option, PR 6.1 Levada do Risco is 1.5 km each way and officially takes around two hours. Its reward is the Risco viewpoint and its tall waterfall dropping down a dark rock face. Both trails start in the Rabaçal area from ER 105, and both require advance registration and payment through the regional SIMplifica system.

Walkers with more time can also consider PR 6.2 Levada do Alecrim or PR 6.3 Vereda da Lagoa do Vento. These are better alternatives when you want to explore beyond the busiest 25 Fontes route, but always choose only marked, officially open trails. Trail status can change at short notice because of weather and safety work.

Where to eat and what facilities to expect

Facilities at Pico da Urze are limited, which is part of its charm. The most useful nearby stop is Restaurante Jungle Rain at Estalagem Pico da Urze, listed by Calheta Municipality in the Paul da Serra area. It is a practical place for a proper meal or a drink before continuing across the plateau, but opening arrangements can vary, so call ahead if you are relying on it for lunch.

For walking information, the Rabaçal Reception Centre is useful before entering the trail network. It has information about Rabaçal, Madeira’s levadas and the Laurissilva forest, and is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00. Do not depend on finding a shop once you begin a walk: carry enough water, a snack and all the layers you may need.

  • Search for the Rabaçal viewpoint: “Miradouro do Rabaçal” is usually more precise in navigation than the wider Pico da Urze name.
  • Visit before a major walk: use the viewpoint as a calm orientation stop before PR 6 or PR 6.1.
  • Book PR routes in advance: reception can be weak in the mountains, so complete the required trail registration before arriving.
  • Carry a windproof layer: the plateau can feel cold even when the south coast is warm and sunny.
  • Do not judge the view too quickly: mist often moves through in short intervals, revealing the valley for a few minutes.
  • Refuel before driving on: food choices are limited on Paul da Serra, so plan meals rather than assuming every roadside stop will be open.

Perguntas frequentes

Is Pico da Urze worth visiting if I am not hiking?
Yes. It is a worthwhile short scenic stop for the Rabaçal valley viewpoint, open highland scenery and changing mountain weather. Allow around 15 to 30 minutes if you are only stopping for views.

Can I visit Pico da Urze by bus?
Public transport is not the most practical way to reach this highland area. A hire car, taxi, guided excursion or organised walking transfer is usually the more realistic option.

Do I need to pay to see the Pico da Urze viewpoint?
There is no separate viewpoint admission listed. Payment and advance registration apply when entering Madeira’s classified PR walking trails, including the main Rabaçal routes.

Which is better from Pico da Urze: 25 Fontes or Risco?
Choose PR 6 Levada das 25 Fontes for a longer, moderate walk to the springs and lagoon. Choose PR 6.1 Levada do Risco for a shorter, easier route focused on the waterfall viewpoint.
