Madeira for Couples: A Romantic 4-Day Itinerary for Honeymoons and Anniversaries

A Madeira honeymoon itinerary for 4 days works best when you stay in Funchal, keep one full day for the west coast and leave room for long lunches, sea views and unhurried evenings. Madeira is dramatic enough for a special-occasion escape, yet compact enough to combine wine, gardens, coastal swimming and mountain scenery without changing hotels. In this updated guide: where couples should stay, a realistic four-day plan, how to manage Madeira without a car, when to book and what to do if rain changes your plans.

Make this four-day Madeira itinerary work for both of you

For a first honeymoon or anniversary trip, base yourselves in Funchal for all four nights. The city is the simplest choice without a car: the airport is around 20 to 25 minutes away, and you can reach restaurants, wine lodges, the Old Town, the cable car and the waterfront on foot or by short taxi ride. It also gives you the widest choice of hotels, from intimate city properties to larger sea-view resorts.

Choose the Old Town or central Funchal if evenings spent walking to dinner, wine bars and live atmosphere matter most. Choose the Lido and western hotel zone if you prefer bigger pools, Atlantic-facing terraces and the seaside promenade. Both work well; the key is avoiding an isolated rural stay if you do not intend to hire a car.

A rental car is useful for independent viewpoints and remote restaurants, but it is not essential for this itinerary. Book a private driver or a well-reviewed small-group west-coast excursion for one day instead. That removes the pressure of narrow roads, changeable mountain weather and one partner having to stay sober at dinner.

Facto práticoWhat to plan
Best baseFunchal Old Town, city centre or Lido area for restaurants, taxis and walkable evenings.
Airport to FunchalAllow around 20 to 25 minutes by taxi, transfer, Aerobus or rental car.
Funchal Cable CarFunchal–Monte takes about 15 minutes. Adult fares are €16 one way or €22 return; it operates daily, except Christmas Day.
Easy city swimDoca do Cavacas, between Lido and Praia Formosa, has volcanic pools and sea access. Daily opening hours are 10:00 to 18:00.
Classified walksPre-booking is required for Madeira’s official PR walking routes. The usual 2026 visitor fee is €4.50 per person for an individual route, excluding PR1.
Wine tastingBlandy’s Wine Lodge is in central Funchal and is generally open daily, with a Sunday midday break.

Day 1: Arrive in Funchal, take the cable car and settle into island time

Do not over-plan arrival day. Check in, have a late lunch and begin with the Funchal Cable Car from the Old Town to Monte. The ride is short, but the gradual lift above red-tiled roofs and the harbour is a suitably memorable first view of Madeira. Buy a one-way ticket if you would rather return downhill by taxi, which is more practical after walking around Monte.

Spend the afternoon wandering Monte’s quieter lanes and viewpoints rather than trying to fit in every attraction. Back in Funchal, choose an early dinner in the Old Town or on Avenida do Mar. Reserve a table with an outdoor terrace if you are celebrating an anniversary, especially on Fridays and Saturdays.

If the weather is warm, begin or end the day with a swim at Doca do Cavacas. It is a compact volcanic bathing complex with direct sea access, showers and changing facilities, and makes an easy alternative to a beach day when you want to remain close to your hotel.

Day 2: Take the scenic west-coast day for Porto Moniz, Seixal and sunset views

Make day two your big landscape day. A private west-coast tour is the most relaxed choice for couples, particularly if you want to stop for photographs, swim when conditions allow and enjoy a drink with lunch. A typical route includes viewpoints above Ribeira Brava, the high plateau around Paul da Serra, Porto Moniz and the black-sand scenery of Seixal.

Porto Moniz is famous for its lava-formed natural pools, where Atlantic water continually enters the volcanic-rock basins. Conditions can be rough in winter or on stormy days, so treat swimming as a bonus rather than a fixed promise. If you prefer a quieter, free-access option, the nearby Cachalote pools have a more natural feel but fewer facilities.

Ask your driver or guide to keep the final stretch of the day flexible. Madeira sunsets are usually most rewarding from the sunnier south-west coast, but cloud can gather quickly over the mountains. A relaxed dinner in Ponta do Sol, Calheta or back in Funchal is better than rushing across the island in fading light.

Day 3 and day 4: Wine, easy walks, coastal views and a celebration dinner

Start day three slowly in central Funchal. Visit the Mercado dos Lavradores in the morning, then walk through the historic centre towards Avenida Arriaga for a Madeira wine tasting. Blandy’s Wine Lodge is a strong choice for couples because it combines the atmosphere of historic cellars with an easy central location; guided visits and tastings should be booked ahead in high season and around weekends.

Use the afternoon for an easy, low-commitment walk. The Funchal seafront promenade is ideal: it is largely level, open to the Atlantic and easy to leave whenever you spot a bar, swimming complex or appealing lunch terrace. If you want more greenery, take a taxi to the Palheiro area for gardens and sea views, then return to the city for dinner.

On day four, choose between a gentle half-day in Funchal or a short taxi trip east to Garajau for cliffside Atlantic views. This is the day to book your special meal rather than chase another long drive. Plan dinner for sunset, but reserve for 30 to 45 minutes before sunset so you can enjoy the changing light without arriving hungry after dark.

For wine-minded couples, read our guide to Madeira’s oldest wine estates and vineyards before deciding whether to add a countryside tasting. If an easy levada walk appeals more than another city afternoon, the Levada do Norte is a useful sunny-side option, provided you check access status and arrange transport.

Booking, weather and insider tips for couples

  • Book the hotel first: For spring, summer, Christmas and New Year stays, secure your preferred Funchal room before booking tours or restaurants.
  • Reserve one standout dinner: Make one evening genuinely special, then keep the other nights flexible for spontaneous Old Town dining.
  • Do not schedule mountain walks on departure day: Weather, trail conditions and transport can change quickly at altitude.
  • Keep a rain-plan afternoon: A wine lodge tasting, long lunch, hotel spa treatment or relaxed café stop is far better than forcing a wet viewpoint tour.
  • Use taxis strategically: They make sense for Monte, Garajau and dinner reservations, while Funchal itself is best explored on foot.
  • Check official trail status before paying: Madeira’s classified PR routes require advance registration and can close temporarily for safety or maintenance.

Perguntas frequentes

Is four days enough for a Madeira honeymoon?
Yes. Four days is enough for a romantic introduction if you base yourselves in Funchal and limit yourselves to one full-day island tour. You will see the coast, swim, taste Madeira wine and still have relaxed evenings together.

Where should couples stay in Madeira without a car?
Funchal is the best choice. The Old Town suits couples who want character and restaurants nearby, while the Lido area suits those who prioritise sea views, hotel pools and the promenade.

When should we book a Madeira anniversary trip?
Book accommodation several months ahead for Easter, summer, the flower festival period, Christmas and New Year. For a special dinner, wine tour or private driver, booking after your hotel is confirmed is sensible.

What should couples do in Madeira if it rains?
Stay around Funchal and swap outdoor plans for a wine lodge visit, a long regional lunch, a spa afternoon or museum time. Rain in Funchal does not always mean rain on the south-west coast, but avoid committing to exposed mountain viewpoints when visibility is poor.
