Madeira’s Oldest Wine Estates and Vineyards: Historic Producers You Can Visit

The oldest Madeira wine estates to visit combine centuries-old labels with working Funchal cellars, coastal vineyard country and some of the island’s most distinctive fortified-wine tastings. The key is knowing that Madeira’s oldest names are not always separate visitor estates: several historic brands now belong to the same wine company and are experienced at one central lodge. In this updated guide, you will find a ranking by founding date, which producers welcome visitors, how to book, how to get there and the Madeira wine styles each house is best placed to introduce.

How this ranking works: historic houses, not just buildings

Madeira wine history is older than most of its visitor facilities. The island was already exporting wine in the early centuries of settlement, while today’s famous houses developed as merchants, producers, exporters and family businesses over different periods. For that reason, this ranking follows the founding dates of the historic wine houses or their oldest predecessor companies, rather than the age of the particular tasting room you enter.

Also, do not expect a Bordeaux-style château surrounded by one large vineyard. Madeira’s vines are usually small, steep plots worked by many growers across the island. The most rewarding visits are therefore atmospheric ageing lodges and cellars, with vineyard scenery added as a separate stop around Câmara de Lobos, Estreito de Câmara de Lobos or São Vicente.

Ranked: the oldest Madeira wine houses and estates

1. Cossart Gordon — 1745. Cossart Gordon is the oldest established Madeira wine company, founded by William Gordon and Francis Newton. It is now part of Madeira Wine Company, so there is no separate Cossart Gordon estate tour to book. Instead, visit Blandy’s Wine Lodge in central Funchal, where Madeira Wine Company’s historic cellars and tasting rooms offer the practical way to explore this heritage. Look for refined Sercial, Verdelho, Bual and Malmsey styles, from dry aperitif wines to richly sweet after-dinner Madeira.

2. Blandy’s — 1811. John Blandy established himself on Madeira in 1811, and the family remains closely associated with the business. Blandy’s Wine Lodge is the island’s strongest all-round choice for first-time visitors: it has guided cellar tours, historic displays, a cooperage element and tastings at several levels. The house is particularly useful for understanding the classic progression from crisp, dry Sercial through medium-dry Verdelho and medium-rich Bual to sweet Malmsey.

3. Miles — 1814. Originally established as Rutherford & Grant, Miles is another historic Madeira Wine Company label rather than a stand-alone visitor operation. It is especially associated with Tinta Negra, the island’s versatile and widely planted Madeira grape. Visit the Wine Lodge to taste and buy Miles wines, but do not plan a separate Miles cellar tour.

4. Pereira D’Oliveira — oldest predecessor founded in 1820. D’Oliveira is one of Funchal’s essential stops for serious Madeira drinkers. Its present business incorporates several older Madeiran producer-exporter families, with the oldest house dating to 1820. The historic tasting and sales rooms are in a listed building on Rua dos Ferreiros, and the house is prized for old dated wines, particularly Verdelho, Boal and Malvasia. This is less of a polished museum-style tour and more of a traditional wine-house visit: ideal if your priority is tasting mature Madeira.

5. Henriques & Henriques — 1850. Founded in Câmara de Lobos, Henriques & Henriques is the best historic choice for visitors who want to leave Funchal and connect wine with the south-coast vineyard landscape. Its Wine Lodge offers the full spectrum of Madeira styles, including extra-dry, Rainwater, dry, medium-dry, medium-sweet and sweet examples. The producer is also closely linked with Quinta Grande vineyards, including Verdelho wines from that area.

6. H.M. Borges — 1877. Family-run H.M. Borges offers one of Funchal’s most characterful cellar experiences. Founded by Henrique Menezes Borges in 1877, it works from a historic building on Rua 31 de Janeiro and welcomes visitors for guided tours and commented tastings. Choose it for a quieter, more personal-feeling visit and to compare age-indicated blends with Colheita and Frasqueira wines.

Visitor-friendly tastings versus trade-only facilities

Best for a booked cellar tour: Blandy’s Wine Lodge and H.M. Borges are the clearest choices. Both have central Funchal locations, regular visitor experiences and a strong sense of the ageing-cellar environment. Blandy’s is more structured and multilingual; H.M. Borges is a smaller-scale alternative with advance booking recommended.

Best for an independent tasting stop: D’Oliveira works well if you are walking around Funchal’s old streets and want to focus on old stock, while Henriques & Henriques is excellent in Câmara de Lobos for a shop-and-tasting visit. H&H offers complimentary tastings of its three-year-old range, with additional paid tasting choices for older wines.

Trade-only or non-visitor heritage: Cossart Gordon and Miles are historic labels rather than independently visitable estates. Their production, storage and vineyard supply networks should not be treated as drop-in attractions; experience the brands through Madeira Wine Company’s public Wine Lodge instead.

For Blandy’s, book online before you arrive in Madeira, particularly for a weekend or a late-afternoon English-language tour. A standard guided option is enough for newcomers; select a vintage-focused tasting only if you already know you enjoy Madeira’s oxidative, nutty and dried-fruit character. The detailed Blandy’s Wine Lodge guide is useful for comparing the available experiences.

Central Funchal visits are easy on foot or by taxi from most hotels. For H&H, take a taxi or rental car to Câmara de Lobos, around the bay west of Funchal; local bus services also serve the town, but allow time for the walk from the stop. Make it a half-day with the fishing harbour, a waterfront lunch and a drive through the terraced vineyards above town.

  • Book cellar tours early: A confirmed tour is far better than arriving at a full lodge, especially in high season and on wet-weather days.
  • Start dry and finish sweet: Taste Sercial before Verdelho, Bual and Malmsey so the sweeter wines do not overwhelm the lighter styles.
  • Do not confuse a wine lodge with a vineyard walk: The cellar experience is the main attraction; vineyard views usually require a separate drive.
  • Use taxis after tastings: Madeira’s roads are steep, parking in Funchal is limited and fortified wine is stronger than it tastes.
  • Ask for a dated wine comparison: A Colheita or Frasqueira tasting is the most memorable way to understand why Madeira can age for decades.
  • Buy carefully for flights: Put bottles in checked luggage or ask the producer about collection options after airport security.

Perguntas frequentes

What is the oldest Madeira wine producer visitors can experience?
Cossart Gordon dates from 1745, but it does not operate as a separate visitor estate. The practical visitor experience is at Blandy’s Wine Lodge in Funchal, run by Madeira Wine Company.

Which historic Madeira wine house is best for first-time visitors?
Blandy’s Wine Lodge is the easiest introduction because it combines regular guided tours, a central location and clear tastings of the main Madeira styles.

Can I visit vineyards as well as wine cellars in Madeira?
Yes, but usually not as part of a standard Funchal cellar tour. For vineyard scenery, head towards Câmara de Lobos and Quinta Grande, where terraced vines are part of the surrounding landscape.

Do I need to book Madeira wine tastings in advance?
Book guided tours in advance, particularly at Blandy’s and H.M. Borges. Drop-in tastings may be possible at shops and lodges, but availability can change on busy days.
