Praia Formosa, on Funchal’s western edge, is the longest public beach on Madeira Island, stretching for 2 km. Madeira is not an island of long, uninterrupted sandy shores: its coastline is volcanic, steep and largely made up of pebbles, bathing complexes and compact coves. In this updated guide, we rank the island’s longest beach areas and seafront strands, explain which ones have real sand, and help you choose the right place for swimming, children, an evening walk, parking or public transport.

How this ranking works: beach length is not always sand length

“Longest beaches in Madeira” can mean different things. A long public beach may include several joined coves; a wide bay may combine a sandy bathing area with a much longer pebble shore; and the island’s best sunset walk may be a promenade rather than a beach at all.

This ranking therefore separates three useful categories: continuous public beach frontage, long bays with distinct sand and pebble sections, and purpose-built seafront promenades. It covers Madeira Island, not Porto Santo. That distinction matters: Porto Santo, another island in the Madeira archipelago, has a continuous 9 km golden-sand beach and is in a completely different league for classic beach walking.

Ranking Madeira Island’s longest beaches and seafront strands

1. Praia Formosa, Funchal — 2 km of linked beach frontage
Praia Formosa is the clear answer if your priority is length. It is a complex of four connected beaches—Areeiro, Praia Nova, Praia dos Namorados and Formosa—rather than one uniform strip of sand. Expect mostly dark volcanic pebbles, with some darker sandy sections, open Atlantic water and a broad coastal setting below the western Funchal hotels.

It is the best choice for a proper beach walk on Madeira Island, especially outside the hottest hours. The surface can be uncomfortable in bare feet, so water shoes are useful. For swimming, choose the managed sections, assess the sea before entering and follow the flags. Praia Formosa is also practical from Funchal without a car, making it the best long beach for visitors based in the capital.

2. Machico Bay — several hundred metres of beach, promenade and marina
Machico is Madeira’s most rounded beach destination. The bay extends for several hundred metres and brings together the compact golden-sand Banda d’Além beach on one side of the river mouth, the much longer São Roque pebble beach, a marina, a pier and a level waterfront route.

For a family day, Machico is often the better all-round choice than Praia Formosa. Banda d’Além has imported golden sand, access walkways, changing facilities, toilets and seasonal lifeguard supervision. São Roque is a pebble beach but occupies a large part of the bay and has useful nearby services. The setting is more sheltered-looking than Funchal’s open western coast, although conditions can still change and the sea should never be assumed calm.

3. Calheta Beach — 100 metres of golden sand in a protected marina setting
Calheta’s sandy beach is officially listed as 100 metres long. It is short compared with Praia Formosa, but its two protected sandy sections are among the most convenient places on Madeira for people who specifically want golden sand and an easier, more enclosed swimming environment.

The beach sits beside Calheta Marina on the sunnier south-west coast. It has facilities close at hand and is a particularly sensible option for younger children, provided the day’s sea conditions are suitable. Its small scale is also its limitation: arrive early in warm, sunny weather if you want the best choice of space.

4. Seixal Beach — a compact natural black-sand beach with dramatic scenery
Seixal is not one of Madeira’s longest beaches by measured frontage, but it deserves a place in this practical ranking because it is one of the island’s most memorable natural sandy beaches. Black sand, green mountains and the north-coast cliffs create a striking backdrop, while the sheltered harbour-side position gives it a more intimate feel than the large southern beaches.

Go to Seixal for scenery, photographs and a slower beach stop rather than for a long shoreline walk. There are showers and a bar nearby, and kayak hire may be available, but Atlantic swell on the north coast can be significant. It is not the place to choose solely because the water looks tempting in a photograph.

5. Alagoa Beach, Porto da Cruz — a changeable black-sand and pebble strand
Alagoa is another compact beach rather than a long one, but its open black-sand frontage is more spacious in feeling than many Madeira coves. Depending on season and currents, its layout can change between sand and rounded pebbles. It has public parking, toilets, changing rooms, a playground and places to eat, making it useful for a relaxed stop on the north-east coast.

Swimming is not its strongest reason to visit when the surf is up. Porto da Cruz is well known for waves, and Alagoa is popular with surfers. For walkers and sunset watchers, however, the village setting beneath Penha d’Águia is a rewarding alternative to Funchal’s more urban coast.

Best choices for swimming, children, walks and sunsets

For a long walk: choose Praia Formosa if you want beach underfoot, or the 2.2 km Câmara de Lobos Promenade if you want a smoother route with sea views and cafés at the finish. The latter is a seafront walk, not a sandy beach, but it is Madeira’s strongest option for an unhurried coastal stroll.

For children and sand: Machico’s Banda d’Além and Calheta are the most straightforward choices. Both have golden imported sand and practical infrastructure. Machico has the advantage of a larger town, more level walking and a longer bay to explore; Calheta generally feels more like a compact resort beach day.

For a sunset: Praia Formosa faces west and is the best beach choice near Funchal for evening light. For a more polished walk, continue along the promenade towards Câmara de Lobos. For wider ideas beyond the coast, see our guide to Madeira’s best sunrise and sunset viewpoints.

For natural black sand: Seixal is the scenic favourite, while Alagoa is a good east-coast alternative with more village facilities. Neither should be treated as a guaranteed calm-water beach: wind, swell and currents matter more than the colour of the sand.

Parking and public transport: the practical reality

A hire car gives the greatest flexibility for Seixal, Calheta and Porto da Cruz, but it does not guarantee easy parking beside the water in peak periods. At Praia Formosa, use the beach car parks only if you arrive early, and do not leave valuables visible. Machico has the most convenient town-based arrangement: you can combine the beach with shops, restaurants and the central bus terminal, while nearby Fórum Machico parking is useful for São Roque.

Without a car, base yourself in Funchal for Praia Formosa and the Lido–Câmara de Lobos seafront. Machico is also realistic as a day trip by public bus. Calheta, Seixal and Porto da Cruz require more planning because journeys are longer and services are less frequent; always check the timetable for the exact day rather than relying on an old route map.

  • Bring water shoes: Madeira’s pebble beaches are beautiful but can be painful and slippery when entering the sea.
  • Use flags, not assumptions: a beach that was calm in the morning may be unsafe later as swell or wind changes.
  • Choose Machico for an easy no-car beach day: it combines sand, a promenade, food options and transport in one compact town.
  • Do not confuse the Lido with a beach: Funchal’s Lido area is excellent for sea access and promenades, but it is primarily a bathing-complex coast.
  • Visit Praia Formosa late in the day: it is especially good for a walk and west-facing sunset, with less need to claim a prime sunbathing spot.
  • Keep north-coast plans flexible: Seixal and Porto da Cruz are spectacular in good conditions, but Atlantic swell can quickly change the experience.
