There are seven active Madeira wine producer-exporters in 2026, but only a handful operate regular visitor experiences that feel like a classic winery tour. The important distinction is that Madeira’s best-known places are often historic wine lodges, ageing cellars or tasting rooms rather than vineyards with daily public tours. In this updated guide, you will find the complete producer list, the places visitors can realistically experience, where they are located and which options suit first-time tasters versus serious Madeira wine fans.

What counts as a winery in Madeira?

When travellers ask how many wineries are there in Madeira, they usually mean places where they can taste Madeira wine. That is not quite the same thing as counting licensed producers.

A producer is the company authorised to make and bottle Madeira wine. A winery is the production facility where grapes are received, fermented and wines may undergo the heated estufagem process. A wine lodge is usually a historic urban building where wines age in cask, often by the slower canteiro method, and where visitors can tour and taste. Finally, a tasting room or shop may offer samples and sales without a full cellar visit.

This explains why Funchal is the easiest place to explore Madeira wine despite most vineyards being outside the city. The island’s vineyards are small, terraced plots spread across many microclimates, while several famous wine houses keep their old casks and visitor spaces in town. Madeira’s official tourism information highlights vineyard areas around Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, São Vicente and Seixal, as well as Funchal’s Quinta de Santa Luzia.

The complete list: seven Madeira wine producers

In March 2026, the Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicrafts Institute (IVBAM) identified seven producer-exporter companies for Madeira wine: Justino’s Madeira Wines, Madeira Vintners, Vinhos Barbeito, H.M. Borges, Henriques & Henriques, Pereira d’Oliveira and Madeira Wine Company.

That is the useful answer for visitors. Do not count every label as a separate winery: Madeira Wine Company, for example, owns and markets several historic brands, including Blandy’s, Cossart Gordon and Miles, but it is one producer company.

Not all seven have a regular, clearly advertised public visit programme. For a straightforward experience, focus on the visitor-friendly houses below; contact the others directly if you have a particular bottle, vintage or trade-level interest in mind.

The best Madeira wine visits in Funchal

Blandy’s Wine Lodge is the obvious starting point for most first-time visitors. It is in central Funchal, on Avenida Arriaga, and combines a historic lodge, family history, ageing casks, shop and guided tastings. It is not the company’s main production winery — that is in Caniçal — but it is the most polished introduction to Madeira wine and the easiest to reach on foot from central hotels. Guided tours and tutored tastings should be reserved ahead, especially for a preferred language or a more detailed tasting.

H.M. Borges, on Rua 31 de Janeiro, is the better choice for visitors who want a smaller, more traditional cellar atmosphere. Its historic Funchal premises offer guided visits and tastings, including private premium formats, and the house recommends advance booking because spaces are limited. Weekday opening hours are published as 09:00–12:30 and 14:00–17:30.

Pereira d’Oliveira, on Rua dos Ferreiros, is particularly rewarding for experienced drinkers, collectors and anyone curious about older Madeira. Think of it primarily as a historic sales and tasting stop rather than a scheduled visitor centre: contact the house in advance if you want a guided tasting, a group visit or a chance to try a specific older wine. Its central location makes it easy to pair with Blandy’s or H.M. Borges in one unhurried afternoon.

For a vineyard element without leaving Funchal, consider Blandy’s Vineyards at Quinta de Santa Luzia. This is a working family estate with less than one hectare under vine, growing mainly Bual alongside Verdelho and Terrantez. Year-round guided vineyard visits include a commented tasting at Quinta das Malvas, and private tours are available. It is an excellent choice for travellers who want to understand the landscape behind the bottle, not just the cellar ageing.

Winery and lodge visits beyond central Funchal

Vinhos Barbeito in Câmara de Lobos is the strongest choice for serious wine fans who want to see a modern working producer. Its 2026 programme offers weekday tours in Portuguese or English, excluding public holidays, with advance reservation required. The Gold visit includes four Madeira wines and the Platinum visit includes seven wines, with older and rarer categories possible in the latter. It is best reached by car, taxi or a pre-arranged driver from Funchal; allow extra time rather than treating it as a quick stop between sightseeing plans.

Henriques & Henriques has a wine lodge and commercial space in Câmara de Lobos. It is an especially good low-pressure option for independent visitors: parties of fewer than six can visit during weekday opening hours without booking, while groups of six or more must reserve. The visit includes the ageing area and a tasting of its three-year-old range. It is closed on weekends, public holidays and for an annual two-week Christmas break, so check your dates carefully.

Justino’s has its production address in Caniço, east of Funchal. It is one of the island’s major producers, but its official website does not currently provide a reliable public tour timetable. Treat any visit as an advance-enquiry appointment rather than a walk-in experience. Madeira Vintners, connected to the Funchal agricultural cooperative, is also a real producer but does not promote a regular visitor programme in the same way as the lodges above.

Which Madeira wine visit should you choose?

If you have only one hour in Funchal, choose Blandy’s Wine Lodge for the most accessible overview. If you prefer a quieter, more personal historic cellar, book H.M. Borges. Choose Pereira d’Oliveira when older bottles and traditional atmosphere matter more than presentation.

For a deeper producer visit, go to Barbeito. Its structured flights make it easier to compare age statements, harvest wines and premium styles. Henriques & Henriques is ideal if you are staying in or visiting Câmara de Lobos and want a simpler introduction without committing to a long formal tour.

Do not expect every visit to include a vineyard. Madeira wine is shaped by island-wide grape growing, careful blending and long ageing; the city lodges are a central part of that story. If you would also like to see rural vineyards and village life, build a wine stop into a wider west- or north-coast day rather than trying to visit every producer in one afternoon.

  • Book Barbeito in advance: every published 2026 tour requires a reservation, and the longer tasting is not a substitute for booking early.
  • Start dry and finish sweet: ask to taste Sercial, Verdelho, Bual and Malvasia in that order to make the changing sweetness levels easier to understand.
  • Do not drive after a tasting: Madeira wine is fortified, so use a taxi, driver or public transport where practical.
  • Ask what is included before ordering older wines: a standard tasting and a rare vintage pour are very different experiences.
  • Allow time for Câmara de Lobos: pair Henriques & Henriques or Barbeito with lunch or a harbour walk instead of rushing back to Funchal.
  • Buy only what you can transport safely: ask the producer about shipping options and keep bottle weight in mind if you are travelling with hand luggage.

Perguntas frequentes

How many wineries are there in Madeira?
There are seven active Madeira wine producer-exporters in 2026. However, only some operate regular public wine tourism experiences, and several visitor stops are wine lodges or tasting rooms rather than production wineries.

Can I visit a Madeira wine winery without a car?
Yes. Blandy’s Wine Lodge, H.M. Borges and Pereira d’Oliveira are in or close to central Funchal and are easy to reach on foot. Câmara de Lobos and Caniço are more convenient by taxi, hired driver or bus.

Do I need to book a Madeira wine tasting?
Book in advance for Barbeito, H.M. Borges, vineyard visits and any specialist tasting. Henriques & Henriques accepts walk-in visits for groups smaller than six during its stated weekday opening hours.

Which Madeira wine visit is best for beginners?
Blandy’s Wine Lodge is the easiest first choice because it explains the island’s wine history, ageing methods and sweetness styles in a central, visitor-focused setting. Choose Barbeito instead if you already know you want a more detailed producer tasting.
