The Funchal to Monte cable car costs €16 one way or €22 return for adults in 2026, but a return ticket is not always the best-value choice. The 15-minute ride from Funchal’s Old Town to Monte is one of Madeira’s classic city experiences, with wide views over the harbour, rooftops and Atlantic. In this updated guide: verified Funchal Monte cable car prices 2026, where to buy tickets, when queues are most likely, the best side of the cabin for views, and how to return downhill without paying for transport you will not use.

What the Funchal–Monte cable car is and why it is worth taking

The Teleférico do Funchal links the lower station on Rua Dom Carlos I, beside Funchal’s Old Town and Almirante Reis area, with Largo das Babosas in Monte. The route is 3.2 km long, climbs roughly 560 metres and takes about 15 minutes. It is a scenic transport ride rather than simply a way of getting uphill: the city spreads below you, with the marina and bay opening out towards the sea.

The upper station is particularly convenient for Monte Palace Tropical Garden, which is a very short walk away. You can also walk to the Church of Our Lady of Monte, the public gardens around Monte and the departure point for the traditional wicker toboggans. Monte therefore works well as a half-day outing from central Funchal rather than a brief cable-car return journey.

Anúncio

Do not confuse this route with the separate Monte to Botanical Garden cable car. They are different services with separate tickets. The Funchal cable car is the line from the Old Town to Monte; the other cable car descends from Monte towards the Botanical Garden.

Funchal Monte cable car prices 2026 and ticket choices

For adults, the official 2026 fare is €16 for a one-way journey and €22 for a return. Children aged 0 to 6 travel free, while children aged 7 to 14 receive a 50% reduction. The small difference between the adult one-way and return fare makes the return ticket good value only if you genuinely intend to come straight back down on the cable car.

Buy a one-way ticket if you plan to explore Monte and come down by toboggan, bus, taxi or on foot. This is the simplest way to avoid paying for an unused cable-car descent. There is no need to buy a cable-car return simply because you have not finalised your downhill plan: the lower-cost one-way ticket keeps the day flexible.

Funchal–Monte cable car practical information, checked in October 2026.

Should you book online and when are queues longest?

Buying online is sensible in busy periods because the operator states that e-ticket holders can go straight to boarding, bypassing the ticket-purchase step. Tickets remain valid for 60 days after purchase, so there is no need to commit to an exact departure time weeks in advance. Keep the ticket ready on your phone and ensure it is accessible without relying on weak mobile data at the station.

The cable car does not publish live queue forecasts, so it is best to plan around the usual pinch points rather than expect a guaranteed quiet time. The lower station can be busiest after breakfast, when organised excursions and independent visitors begin their sightseeing day, while queues uphill often ease later in the afternoon. For the smoothest start, arrive close to opening time. If you are visiting on a cruise-ship day, allow more time and buy online where possible.

For the best views on the ascent, aim for the seaward side of the cabin. In practice, this is generally the left-hand side once the cabin has left the Funchal station and is travelling uphill, although the best position depends on how your group enters and where space is available. On the descent, swap sides for the most direct view towards the bay and harbour. Stand near a window if you can, but do not spend the entire ride looking only at the sea: the gardens and steep hillside neighbourhoods below Monte are part of the experience.

How to return downhill without wasting money

The best return option depends on what you want from the day. If the cable car itself is your main activity, buy the €22 return ticket and ride down when you are ready. It is the most straightforward option, particularly for visitors with limited mobility, families with buggies or anyone staying near the Old Town.

If you want to take the famous wicker toboggan ride, buy the cable car one way. The Carreiros do Monte operate from Monday to Saturday, 09:00–18:00, but do not take online reservations: tickets are sold on site for the same day, and sales may close early when demand is high or weather conditions are unsuitable. The ride ends in Livramento rather than central Funchal, so budget time for a taxi, local bus or downhill walk afterwards.

In October 2026, the toboggan costs €30 for one person, €40 for two people or €60 for three people per sledge. For two travellers, the €40 shared sledge is often the more appealing calculation; for solo visitors, a bus or taxi back from Monte may be better value if the toboggan is not a priority. Read our dedicated Monte Toboggan Ride guide before building it into a tight schedule.

Public buses also serve Monte, including routes 020, 021, 022 and 048. Services and stops can be adjusted for local events or road conditions, so check Horários do Funchal on the day rather than relying on an old timetable screenshot. A taxi is the easiest door-to-door alternative, especially after a long garden visit or if rain begins.

What to do once you arrive in Monte

Monte Palace Tropical Garden is the obvious first stop. It is open daily except 25 December, with seasonal garden hours of 09:00–19:00 from April to September and 09:00–18:00 from October to March. Adult entry is €18, while children up to 14 enter free with an accompanying adult. Allow at least 90 minutes if you want to explore the paths, lakes, tile panels and museum spaces without rushing.

For a lower-cost visit, skip the garden ticket and wander around the church and public areas of Monte instead. The elevated setting offers several attractive city views, although the wider island has many more lookouts worth planning into a road trip or walking day. Our guide to Madeira’s viewpoints is useful if Monte has given you an appetite for more panoramas.

  • Buy one way for a flexible day: Choose the €16 uphill ticket if you may use the toboggan, bus or taxi downhill.
  • Board early: The first part of the morning is the best practical strategy for avoiding the busiest ticket and boarding periods.
  • Use your phone ticket carefully: Save the e-ticket before arriving and keep your screen brightness high for scanning.
  • Allow time after the toboggan: The sledges finish in Livramento, not at the cable-car station or Funchal marina.
  • Do not leave Monte too late: The cable car closes at 17:45, while gardens, buses and weather can all affect your timing.
  • Dress for a cooler hilltop: Monte is higher than the waterfront, and cloud or showers can make the upper area feel noticeably cooler.

Perguntas frequentes

How much is the Funchal to Monte cable car in 2026?
Adult fares are €16 one way and €22 return. Children aged 0 to 6 travel free, while children aged 7 to 14 pay half fare.

Is it cheaper to buy a return cable-car ticket?
It costs only €6 more than a one-way adult ticket, so it is good value if you will return by cable car. It is not good value if you plan to descend by toboggan, taxi, bus or walking.

Can I buy Funchal cable-car tickets online?
Yes. The official operator sells e-tickets that are valid for 60 days after purchase, and says online ticket holders can proceed directly to boarding.

Does the Monte toboggan bring you back to central Funchal?
No. The traditional wicker sledge ride ends in Livramento, so you will need to continue to central Funchal by taxi, bus or on foot.
