Eira do Serrado is the 1,095-metre balcony where Madeira’s mountains suddenly part to reveal Curral das Freiras, the Nun’s Valley, resting far below like a scattering of white houses inside a green cauldron.<\/strong> It is one of the shortest, easiest and most rewarding stops on the island: a five-to-ten-minute walk from the car park delivers one of Madeira’s most photographed panoramas. Eira do Serrado is a mountain pass and viewpoint in the interior of the municipality of C\u00e2mara de Lobos, in the very heart of Madeira. At an altitude of 1095 metres, the Eira do Serrado Viewpoint offers an unobstructed view of the parish of Curral das Freiras, surrounded by the grandeur of Madeira’s characteristic green mountains, located in the mountainous interior of the municipality of C\u00e2mara de Lobos. The platform sits at the top of a ridge, and on a flat area of this valley of monumental proportions lies the town of Curral das Freiras, whose picturesque profile lends a special charm to the mountainous landscape.<\/p>\n

Unlike many of the island’s dramatic lookouts, this one rewards very little effort. You can access this viewpoint via a footpath that begins next to Estalagem da Eira do Serrado. Most visitors are looking down into the valley within ten minutes of parking the car.<\/p>\n

Why it’s worth the detour<\/h2>\n

C\u00f3mo llegar<\/h2>\n

En coche, se llega f\u00e1cilmente a Eira do Serrado desde Funchal atravesando las monta\u00f1as; la mayor\u00eda de las gu\u00edas indican que se tarda entre 20 y 30 minutos desde Funchal, ya que se encuentra en lo alto de las monta\u00f1as centrales, por encima de Curral das Freiras. El tramo final es estrecho y sinuoso, as\u00ed que conduce despacio, sobre todo si viene un autocar tur\u00edstico en sentido contrario.<\/p>\n

Travelling without a car is entirely possible. The easiest way to do this trip is by taking the number 81 bus from Funchal’s Telef\u00e9rico bus station, though not all buses on the route take the detour up to Eira do Serrado. Check the timetable carefully before setting off, as it’s worth confirming your bus actually stops here rather than heading straight down into the valley.<\/p>\n

El breve paseo hasta el mirador<\/h2>\n

Desde el aparcamiento, un sendero pavimentado y de suave pendiente rodea la cima de la monta\u00f1a hasta llegar al mirador. Combining it with the valley: the Nuns’ Path<\/h2>\n

Many visitors don’t stop at the viewpoint at all \u2014 they use it as the starting point for the walk down into Curral das Freiras itself, known locally as the Nuns’ Path. Unlike many of Madeira’s popular levada walks, this path is not a classified ‘PR’ trail, which means that as of 2026 it remains completely free to hike and you do not need to book a time slot on the SIMplifica ticketing website. The route is mostly downhill, well paved and shaded for long stretches, winding through rows of chestnut trees before opening onto sweeping views of the valley. Reckon on an easy, 1 to 2-hour walk depending on pace and photo stops. Most walkers go down only, then pick up the return bus or a taxi from the village rather than climbing back up.<\/p>\n

Right at the top, next to the four-star Estalagem Eira do Serrado, there’s a small cluster of amenities. There’s no entrance fee, and facilities are better than you might expect for a mountain viewpoint \u2014 near the car park, you’ll find a small caf\u00e9, a souvenir shop, and toilets. The caf\u00e9 here is well known for serving a coffee and a famous chestnut cake to travellers on their way to or from the valley, and it’s a good spot to warm up with a poncha before or after the walk. Parking itself is free but limited: at the top of the hill you’ll find a small car park with space for around 20 cars, so arriving outside the late-morning coach rush is worth planning for.<\/p>\n
