Ribeiro Frio: la piscifactoría de truchas de Madeira, el mirador de Balcões y el Parque Forestal de Laurissilva

Palheiro Gardens are one of Madeira’s most rewarding quiet escapes: a beautifully maintained historic garden high above Funchal, with camellias, rare trees, far-reaching bay views and a relaxed tea-house stop. They are especially worthwhile for travellers who want more than the busy central gardens and do not mind travelling uphill into São Gonçalo. In this updated guide: current Palheiro Gardens Madeira tickets 2026, opening times, bus and taxi options, flowering seasons, the Tea House, etiquette and whether to combine the visit with Blandy’s wine experience.

Why visit Palheiro Gardens?

Also known as the Blandy Gardens, Palheiro Gardens sit at roughly 500 metres above sea level on the wooded slopes east of Funchal. This is not a municipal park designed for a quick walk-through: it is a long-established private garden with a distinctive, cultivated character, set within the wider Palheiro estate.

The original estate was developed in the early 19th century by the Count of Carvalhal, while the Blandy family acquired it in 1885. Today, the appeal is in the contrast between formal garden rooms and looser planting: camellia avenues, clipped topiary, rose-covered arches, lakes, broad lawns, mature specimen trees and exotic plants from several continents.

It is a good choice for garden lovers, photographers and couples looking for a slower half-day away from central Funchal. Families can enjoy it too, particularly as children enter free, but the experience is peaceful rather than activity-led. The paths have slopes and steps in places, so it is less suitable for anyone who needs an entirely level visit.

The hillside position also gives the garden a cooler, fresher feel than Funchal’s waterfront. On clear days, pause at the viewpoints for a wide view across the city and bay; for more island panoramas, see our guide to Madeira’s viewpoints.

Palheiro Gardens tickets, opening times and practical facts

Tickets are bought at the entrance rather than through a required advance booking system. The official garden information lists daily opening throughout the year, with last entry one hour before closing. The garden closes on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Opening times and ticket categories are published by the official Palheiro Gardens website. Although the estate is close to Funchal in straight-line terms, do not underestimate the climb: this is an uphill visit, not an easy extension of a walk around the city centre.

How to get to Palheiro Gardens from Funchal

Taxi is the simplest option. The garden estimates a drive of around 15 minutes from Funchal and around 20 minutes from Madeira Airport, traffic permitting. It is particularly convenient if you are travelling as a couple or family, have limited time, or want to arrive comfortably before lunch. Ask your driver to take you to the main entrance at Caminho da Quinta do Palheiro, rather than simply saying “Palheiro”, as the estate covers a wider area.

Bus route 37 is the most useful public-transport choice because it stops at the garden entrance. Routes 36 and 47 also serve the area, but their stops are on the regional road and require a further walk. Services are less frequent than the main city routes, especially at weekends, so check the current timetable with Horários do Funchal before leaving and plan your return journey before you enter.

Driving is easy enough if you are comfortable with Madeiran hills. There is parking shown at the entrance on the garden map. The final roads are narrow and winding in parts, however, and the elevation means this is not the best place to practise driving for the first time on Madeira.

What flowers and garden highlights can you see?

Palheiro is worth visiting in every season because its structure is as important as individual blooms. The garden’s original camellia collection is the major seasonal draw, with the best flowering generally between November and April. This makes Palheiro an excellent winter or early-spring alternative when visitors expect Madeira to be green but are unsure where to find real colour.

February is especially pleasant for freesias, while the garden’s planting changes through spring and summer. Look for the old-fashioned roses trained over the arches in the Rose Garden, the dramatic lower Jardim da Senhora with its sculpted topiary, water features and the huge collection of mature trees. The garden also has areas of Madeiran endemic planting around the viewpoint, planted as part of recovery work after the 2012 fires.

Do not arrive expecting a single “best flower” to dominate the whole garden. Palheiro’s strength is variety: formal borders beside subtropical planting, cool shady corners beside open lawns, and carefully framed views between trees. It is most satisfying when you walk slowly rather than trying to photograph every section in half an hour.

The Tea House and the Blandy connection

The on-site Tea House is open from 10:00 to 17:00 for snacks and lunch, in partnership with Casa Velha do Palheiro. It is a sensible place for a light break rather than a reason to rush your visit: walk the garden first, then use it to rest before the return journey downhill.

Palheiro Gardens belong to the Blandy family story, but they are not a working Madeira-wine lodge or vineyard-tour attraction. If your aim is a guided cellar visit and Madeira wine tasting, that experience is at Blandy’s Wine Lodge on Avenida Arriaga in central Funchal.

You can combine both on the same day if you have a car or use taxis, but they are best treated as two separate experiences: visit Palheiro in the morning for gardens and lunch, then return to Funchal for a pre-booked afternoon wine tour. Trying to fit the gardens around a fixed wine-tour time by bus can feel unnecessarily rushed.

Insider tips for visiting Palheiro Gardens

  • Arrive near opening time: the garden is quietest early in the day, and the higher elevation is usually most comfortable before midday.
  • Wear proper walking shoes: paths are generally manageable, but there are gradients, uneven surfaces and occasional damp patches after rain.
  • Check the bus home first: route 37 is convenient, but do not assume a frequent service in the late afternoon or on a Sunday.
  • Allow time for the lower garden: many visitors focus on the entrance avenue and miss the topiary, rose garden and more intimate garden rooms beyond it.
  • Respect the living collection: stay on paths, do not pick flowers or enter planted beds, and follow staff instructions around any maintenance work.
  • Leave the drone behind: unauthorised drone use is prohibited, and commercial photography or filming requires prior approval from the garden management.

Preguntas frecuentes

How much are Palheiro Gardens tickets in 2026?
Adult entry is €11. Children enter free, visitors aged 15 to 17 pay €6, and the published rate for groups of five is €10 per person.

What is the best month to visit Palheiro Gardens?
For camellias, choose November to April. Spring brings more colour across the garden, but the mature trees, views and layered planting make Palheiro enjoyable throughout the year.

Can I get to Palheiro Gardens by bus?
Yes. Bus 37 stops at the entrance. Buses 36 and 47 serve nearby stops on ER102, but involve an additional walk. Check the live timetable before travelling.

Is Palheiro Gardens worth visiting if I have already seen Monte Palace?
Yes. Monte Palace is more theatrical and larger in scale, while Palheiro feels quieter, more horticultural and more closely connected to a historic Madeiran quinta. Garden enthusiasts will find the two visits complementary.
