Machico: Madeira's first capital and its golden beach

Madeira Theme Park in Santana is open on its regular Tuesday-to-Sunday schedule, and it is most worthwhile for families with younger children or visitors who want an easy, visual introduction to Madeiran culture. It is not a high-adrenaline theme park: expect gardens, traditional houses, small indoor experiences, animals and gentle family attractions spread across a large site. In this updated guide: current Madeira Theme Park Santana tickets, what is included, which attractions may have limited availability, how to combine the visit with Santana’s famous houses, and sensible alternatives for wet weather.

Is Madeira Theme Park currently open?

Parque Temático da Madeira is operating in Santana, on Madeira’s north coast. Its published standard opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00, with a regular weekly closure on Mondays. The park is at Estrada do Parque Temático, n.º 1, just outside Santana’s compact centre, and has free visitor parking.

There is one important practical detail: the site itself advises that individual attractions, demonstrations, boat activities, the Monte Train and the simulator can run to their own timetable or depend on operational and weather conditions. In other words, the park is open, but do not plan a day around one specific ride without checking its availability on arrival. This is particularly relevant during rain, strong wind, school-group visits and quieter periods.

For the simplest planning, arrive shortly after opening, ask which timed attractions are running that day, then organise the rest of your visit around those sessions. The park recommends allowing two to four hours, which is realistic for families who want to see the exhibits without rushing.

Madeira Theme Park Santana tickets and what they include

The official booking page currently lists adult admission at €13, with €9 tickets for children and young people aged 6–14 and visitors aged 65+. Children aged 4–5 are listed at €3. The booking process is a request rather than immediate payment: the park confirms availability, prices and conditions before finalising the reservation.

Admission is described as full access to the park and its attractions. That said, “included” should not be read as a guarantee that every attraction will be operating at every moment of the day. The official visitor information specifically asks guests to confirm the schedule for the simulator, boats, train and demonstrations on arrival.

What to expect inside the park

Madeira Theme Park is a cultural and family attraction rather than a conventional amusement park. Its focus is Madeira’s rural traditions, landscape and history, presented through a mixture of outdoor areas, heritage displays and child-friendly activities. The grounds include gardens, paths, a lake, a playground, a small farm-and-animal area, miniature houses and an ethnographic village with traditional Santana-style buildings.

The strongest cultural section is the village of traditional houses, where the emphasis is on local architecture, handicrafts, regional products and older ways of life. Look out for references to Madeira embroidery, wicker, linen, wool, pottery and Santana bread made in a wood-fired oven. It is a more rounded experience than simply taking a photograph outside a thatched house.

There are also indoor attractions. Discovery of the Islands is a small-boat experience using scenery, projections, light and sound to tell the story of the archipelago’s discovery. Fantastic Journey through Madeira is a motion simulator experience; anyone sensitive to movement should speak to staff before entering.

The lake, boat trips and replica Monte Train are pleasant extras when running, but they should not be the sole reason for buying a ticket. Think of them as part of a leisurely family day rather than major rides.

Is it worth visiting for families, couples and independent travellers?

For families with children: yes, especially if your children enjoy space to move around, animals, gentle rides and hands-on cultural displays. The combination of gardens, play areas and indoor elements gives the visit more variety than a short stop at Santana’s roadside houses.

For adults travelling without children: it depends on your interests. It can be worthwhile if you want to understand Madeiran traditions in one organised setting, particularly on an unsettled day. However, travellers seeking dramatic scenery, hiking or a deeply historical museum may prefer to spend their time in the surrounding north coast instead.

For a quick photo stop: do not buy a park ticket solely to photograph thatched houses. The Núcleo de Casas Típicas, beside Santana Town Hall, is a separate place to see the iconic brightly painted houses and browse local products. The traditional houses are triangular, wooden buildings with steep thatched roofs designed to shed the area’s frequent rain.

How to get there and combine it with Santana

A car is the easiest option. From Madeira Airport, the official estimate for the drive to Santana is around 35–45 minutes, while the route is signposted from Machico via the expressway. If you are using public transport, the park identifies routes 56 and 103 as connections; check the current timetable carefully, as services on the north coast are less frequent than in Funchal.

For a balanced Santana day, start with the park in the morning, have lunch in town, then visit the traditional-house nucleus near the Town Hall. If the weather clears, continue to viewpoints or forest scenery nearby. Queimadas Forest Park is a particularly good alternative for visitors who would rather spend time in Madeira’s Laurissilva landscape; read our Queimadas Forest Park guide before going, especially if you plan to walk.

Rainy-day plans and alternatives if attractions are unavailable

Santana’s north-coast location means cloud, drizzle and sudden showers are normal rather than unusual. A waterproof layer is more useful than an umbrella, as much of the park is outdoors and paths can be wet. The indoor boat experience and simulator can add value on a showery day, but check their schedule immediately after entering.

If heavy rain makes the outdoor areas unappealing, keep expectations realistic: the park can still fill a couple of hours, but it will not replace a full-scale indoor museum. You could instead make a shorter visit, see Santana’s traditional houses in town and choose a relaxed café or drive back towards a drier part of the island. Our guide to Madeira’s wettest and driest places explains why weather can be markedly different between Santana and the south coast.

  • Check the date before travelling: the park is normally closed on Mondays, and festive or operational changes are possible.
  • Book ahead in busy periods: online ticket requests are subject to confirmation, rather than instant automatic approval.
  • Ask about timed attractions first: find out whether the simulator, boats, Monte Train and demonstrations are running before exploring the grounds.
  • Bring a waterproof layer: Santana can be cool and wet even when Funchal is sunny.
  • Combine the park with the town houses: the park’s ethnographic village and the traditional-house nucleus offer different experiences.
  • Allow flexibility with small children: the best visits are unhurried, with time for the playground, animals, gardens and snack breaks.
