New Year in Madeira Island

Madeira Island is known for mild winter and good weather throughout the year. Some people say that spring came to spend the winter here and never went away again. But today, December  31st 2017, there are two things that are certainly somewhat different from the traditional Madeira tranquility – the first is the fact that one day with temperatures around 21 degrees Celsius (different from the traditional cold in the New Year’s Day) and second is the number of people who will be on the streets throughout the night due to illuminated New Year’s Eve.

In fact, both in the streets and in the sea, Funchal fills with brilliance. The Fire, as it is called by the locals sits in 37 different spots in the most diverse mountainous parts of the Island … a spectacle of lights and sounds that enchants natives and those who visit us. A beauty that was officially recognized by the Guinness Book of Records in 2006 as the largest in the world and this year there was an investment by the regional government of $976 thousand Euros in extensive 8 minutes of fires fired in 131,873 shots.

In Funchal Port, the big cruises are “jostling” to watch the fire with champagne feasts, but there are also options that justify more modest budgets – tourist animation companies charge values from $65 Euros to take the tourists to see the lights from the sea on a tour marked by the beauty of the fireworks illuminating the Madeira capital.

According to APRAN these years 2017/2018 had altogether ten cruise ships, with about 20 thousand people. Among them were Thomson Majesty (Thomson Cruises), Azura (P & O Cruises), Queen Victoria (Cunard), Boudicca (Fred Olsen), AIDAbella and AIDAsol, and MSC Divina others. Not to mention the occupation of Hotels that closed with 92% occupancy, without doubt, an excellent landmark for this holiday.

In short, whether in small boats, large cruises, viewpoints scattered on the Island, with family or with friends, spending the New Year’s party in Madeira is without a doubt a fantastic and brilliant experience in an exciting spectacle of color and emotion.
