Levadas and Walks

Madeira Island is considered one of the best places in the world for walks and walks. Our volcanic formation has unequaled beauty, and offers us a variety of trails that cross the whole island with wonderful landscapes.

Discovering these itineraries on foot, reveals landscapes of extreme beauty and puts you in direct contact with the exuberant nature (fauna and flora) of this beautiful Island, deep valleys, tunnels and beautiful waterfalls surround us in quiet or challenging paths, but always of stunning beauty.

In Madeira there are the levadas that are water channels created from the 15th century to bring rainwater from the interior to the agricultural fields of the whole island. Today we have more than two thousand kilometers of levadas, showing the immense potential of pedestrian routes to be explored.

We offer you all the support and logistics necessary to cross mountain trails such as Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo or in the prehistoric Laurisilva Forest (a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999), you have an unforgettable experience in these beautiful paths of Madeira Island.

We have the following regular walks:

Ponta de São Lourenço – Full day

This trek crosses the easternmost peninsula east of the island of Madeira, unlike the rest of the island, has undergrowth and absence of trees, is classified as a partial nature reserve and forms part of the European Network of Sites of Community Importance – Natura 2000 Network.
The walk includes places of protected seabirds such as Cagarra, Roque-de-Castro, Alma Negra and Garajau-common, as well as other species such as Corre-caminhos, Pintassilgo and Canário da terra.
Along the walk we are dazzled with fantastic landscapes, with the Desertas Islands to the South and the islands of Porto Santo to the North (when the weather permits). From this walk you can see the north and south coasts of the Madeira Island.
At the end of this route we find the Sardinha´s house, a support for the vigilantes of the Natural Park of Madeira.
On hot days it is possible to take a bath in the Sardine Cais.

Levada do Caldeirão Verde – Whole Day

This walk starts at the Forest Park of Queimadas at 980 meters above sea level, in the municipality of Santana, next to a sheltered thatched house, looks like a fairy tale, inside the Laurissilva Forest, where we can enjoy a great variety of plant species.
This walkway is extremely beautiful, completely green and welcoming. The walk passes through four tunnels dug by the man, The summit of the walk we find the beautiful Caldeirão Verde (Green Cauldron), an impotent cascade of 110 meters of height whose water falls in a beautiful lagoon of emerald green color .

Rabaçal / 25 Fonts – Full Day

Levada do Rabaçal starts at Paúl da Serra, more precisely at Rabaçal.
From there we can observe one of the deepest valleys of the Island, the Rabaçal Valley and descend to the Forest House of Rabaçal, already inside the Laurissílva Forest, World Heritage of Humanity.
It does not take to long to glimpse the stunning waterfall of Risco, then the viewpoint of Risco, full of green beauty of the forest and the sound of nature, the natural heart of the Madeira Island.
To culminate we find the 25 Fountains and it´s beautiful fresh and green lagoon, surrounded by creepers and gigantic ferns.
After appreciating it´s stunning natural landscape, we return to the same path.

Levada dos Prazeres – Half day

Levada dos Prazeres starts at Calheta, a region where it has a good weather all year.
The levada follows towards the Pleasures, through a path colored by the eucalyptus, wild flowers and acacias.
Our walk follows the course of the water until we arrive at Casa do Lavadeiro, where we stop for a snack and rest while enjoying nature.

Levada in the North – Half day

The Levada do Norte is one of the largest levadas of the Island, with 12,5 km and easy to be covered.
We will leave from a path near Cabo Girão towards Ribeira Brava.
A drive to contemplate the beautiful views of the green fields, plantations and villages of the region of Câmara de Lobos and the Campanário.
As well as much of the Island, the fauna and flora here are present throughout the course. Enjoy to connect with nature and know this region from another perspective.

Levada do Rei – Whole day

The Levada do Rei starts and ends at the Water Treatment Station in Quebradas, São Jorge.
One of the most beautiful beaches on the Island, made by the Laurissilva Forest, Unesco Natural Heritage, with unique landscape of the vegetation here.
First, we come across a mix of endemic vegetation and vegetation introduced after the discovery of the Island. In this first moment several perspectives of the village and of the town there appear, in the distance, of São Jorge and Santana.
Then we enter the interior of the Island, which is still preserved, as well as at the time of discovery, more than five centuries ago.
Here we find the natural and native flora and fauna of Madeira, including laurels, heather, finches, among many others. We passed through a waterfall and arrived at Ribeiro Bonito, an inviting place to stay in silence and listen to nature, before returning to the same route.

Vereda do Larano – Full Day

Vereda do Larano begins in Machico, in Levada dos Marocos, and continues to Porto da Cruz through a path that was used by the population to travel between these two locations.
The Levada reveals a magnificent landscape of Machico. Arriving at Miradouro da Boca do Risco, enjoy the view of the north coast of the Island.
We continue going up to the Miradouro da Boca da Corrida, where we can see Ponta de São Lourenço, Penha D´Águia and if the weather is good, it will still be possible to see the Porto Santo Island.
We set off towards the Porto da Cruz, on a difficult route, in a narrow path that requires a lot of attention due to lack of protection.
Enjoy the walk to appreciate the view of the Atlantic Ocean which is breathtaking.

Vereda dos Maroços – Half day

Levada dos Maroços takes us on a journey through the culture and traditions of Madeira.
Along the way we will have a beautiful view of the Machico and agricultural plantations, as well as often cross with residents of the Island in their chores with the land.
