Casa das Mudas – Museum of Contemporary Art

The Museum has been installed in 1992 in the historic Fort of São Tiago, Funchal  a small beautiful space that soon needed to grow as the collection grew so fast. Then, the Museum was transferred in year 2015 to Arts Center – Casa das Mudas. An important change to welcome the whole contemporary Portuguese art collection.

                                                                

                                                                

Casa das Mudas Arts Center, in Calheta, was inaugurated in 2004 and until it became the Museum of Contemporary Art in year 2015, it had temporary exhibitions of arts and a varied programs in its auditorium. A beautiful space with a wonderful view of the Atlantic Ocean and also the best view of Praia da Calheta and the Marina.

The new museum has an area of 1800 m2 with reserved technical areas, documentation center, auditorium, cafeteria and shopping.

The collection that we found in the Museum has important works of art from the 60´s, and this collection was enlargerd in the 90´s, being today an important national reference of Portuguese artistic production.

                                                      

The exhibition is divided by themes such as Abstraction, No Figuration, Figuration, Portrait (I love it), Landscape, and it is changed from time to time in order to include other important names of contemporary Portuguese art.

                                                                

The Museum has a transfer service, the MudaBus, which runs daily trips from the center of Funchal at 10 am and returning to Calheta around 1 pm. For information about MudaBus , please call (+351) 291 820 900.

You can visit it from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm (closed Monday and holidays). The ticket price is € 4 or € 1 for retirees.
